That would mean that the fruits, chocobos, and then some of the oddities around town like those clown vending machines with the ammo or the little cleaner robots are from other worlds.

I think that seems more likely...after all, those were already here to start with, and it seemed...less something coming out of nowhere? So perhaps a similar but slightly different mechanic.
